Crypto card cashback: taxation in Spain
What is crypto cashback: % of spending returned in crypto (e.g., 1-5% in CRO from Crypto.com Visa).
Tax treatment options:
- Capital income (conservative): Cashback = reward/interest equivalent. Report as capital income at market value when received.
- Discount (no immediate tax): Cashback reduces purchase cost, not income.
Practical position: Capital income is the most conservative and common adviser position in Spain.
Acquisition cost: CRO received as cashback has acquisition cost = market value when received (already taxed as capital income). Later sale gain = sale price - that acquisition cost.
Staking for card tier: Not a taxable event itself. Staking rewards = additional capital income.
kointax imports Crypto.com history and auto-classifies cashback as capital income.
